DNA paternity testing can be carried out successfully with many different samples. Today’s DNA testing technology makes it possible to analyze not only a vast range of samples but also work with quantities of DNA that are miniscule and sometimes also extremely degraded. The convenience of home paternity testing also means you don’t actually have to go to any laboratories or doctors as everything is done by postal and online means.
Contents and use of home testing kit
The home testing kit is convenient for the simple reason that it enables sample collection at home in the easiest and most straightforward manner. Home kits contain oral swabs which are to be rubbed around the inside of the mouth for 10 seconds and then left to dry for around 1 hour. The rubbing action of the cotton-ended part of the swab against the inner lining of the mouth (the epithelial membrane) causes thousands and cheek cells to detach and stick to the swab. Under laboratory conditions, these cheek cells are then ruptured and the DNA is freed from the cell nucleus within which it is contained. Swabs not only offer the advantage of being easy to use but DNA is easily extracted from oral swabs which also makes DNA analysis with such a sample cheaper.
Blood samples in paternity testing
Long gone are the days when medical blood draws were used to carry out DNA tests. The problem with blood is not so much the blood in itself, which is an excellent sample to use for a DNA test, but the medical blood draw. Medical blood draws are impractical, require assistance of a doctor, nurse or phlebotomist and not unusually, people shudder at the thought of needles- especially kids. Medical blood draws are for the most part strongly discouraged – also not to be forgotten the problems of shipping blood which must be declared pathogen free and packed accordingly in leak proof containers, be kept at a low temperature and everything sealed with a biohazard label.
Blood stains can also be used as samples for a DNA paternity test. The chances of successful DNA extraction with blood stains is lower than with a medical blood draw. Blood stains have a 75% chance of successful DNA extraction, a probability which is as high as 99%.
Other DNA samples commonly used
There is such a vast range of samples that can be tested – some of them being biological material such as hair DNA testing , semen, nail clippings etc. Other samples will contain DNA by default such as a toothbrush, Kleenex, razor clippings etc. Normally, the person assisting you with your DNA test will explain the fact that some samples are essentially better than others, that there is an added cost for testing these samples and the way in which you should collect and package each sample.

Non invasive prenatal paternity testing allows you to know the paternity of a child in pregnancy but with 0% risk. This test is in stark contrast in terms of risks to other invasive sampling procedures like Chorionic Villus sampling and amniocentesis. Not only does non invasive paternity test mean there is no risk of miscarriage but it also means you will suffer from no side effects following the DNA sampling which is pain-free.
Amniocentesis and CVS: side effects
The possible side effects following amniocentesis or chorionic villus are many. For example, soreness at the point of the needle puncture is common following amniocentesis. With both types of fetal DNA sampling, chills, fever and cramping. In the rather more worrying scenario there may be leakage of amniotic fluid – this will need immediate treatment because if levels fall too low, it could seriously endanger the baby’s life. Further to these side effects, doctors recommend taking it easy for a few days following these invasive procedures. They suggest avoiding intercourse, lifting heavy weights and air travelling.
Why do a Non Invasive Prenatal Paternity testing?
Due to the fact that non invasive fetal DNA sampling is done with a simple blood draw, the whole test is not only painless and without risk but also free of any side effects. The blood draw required for such a test is a standard blood draw, usually from the inner part of the forearm or from what is known as the median cubital vein. The test is made possible by a breakthrough in the field of genetics: scientists can analyse the fetus’s DNA in the maternal blood stream. The test becomes feasible starting from around the 10th week and should not be done before the first 10 weeks have elapsed. This is because fetal DNA increases as pregnancy progresses and the amount of fetal DNA in the maternal blood stream at the 10th week of pregnancy is enough to conclude the test.
How accurate is non Invasive prenatal testing?
Non invasive prenatal paternity testing is just as accurate as invasive prenatal paternity test or as a paternity test carried out after birth. Like a paternity test result in fact, you can expect a probability of paternity in excess of 99.9% if the tested man is the biological father of the child. Conversely, if the tested man is not the biological father of the child, the probability of paternity will be 0%. If the test is not done too early and all precautions adhered to, prenatal paternity test results will provide you with the necessary results for your peace of mind.

If you have been wondering how to do a paternity test here are a few basic considerations to bear in mind. First of all you need to know whether you need the paternity test for legal purposes or just for curiosity purposes. If you are not undertaking any legal proceedings and only harbor doubts about the paternity of a child then you can settle things by doing a simple and discreet, peace of mind test.
How do I collect DNA samples?
Once you have decided on the type of paternity test you need, the following step will involve the use of a DNA test kit which will enable you to collect the DNA samples. If you are however, doing a legal test or a prenatal paternity test you will not be collecting samples yourself. If it is a home test, online paternity testing companies will send out a kit and you can easily collect samples yourself. The kit contains oral swabs which are today the most commonly used method for collecting DNA samples. The swabs must be rubbed inside the mouth and under the tongue. There are some very basic precautions to follow which include not eating, drinking or smoking for 1 hour prior to taking DNA samples. The DNA sampling procedure and precautions will be pretty much the same whichever company you choose. Whilst you can carry out the paternity test without the mother’s sample, ideally her sample should be included. In your home test kit you will also have some very basic paper work to fill out; the forms you fill out will need to be returned to the laboratory along with the samples.
Paternity testing: analysis and results
Once samples are received it is only a matter of a few days till you get your DNA test results. Once your DNA samples are at the lab the DNA in the samples needs to extracted from the cells, the DNA is the replicated through the use of an enzyme and amplified using what is called Polymerase Chain Reaction or PCR. The result is easy to understand. First and foremost, most results follow very much the same template: the genetic markers are analyzed and the DNA profiles of the father, child and the mother drawn up.
The child and father will have to share all their genetic markers if he is the biological father of the child. To make things even clearer, it is pretty much standard to show a probability of paternity expressed as a percentage. This probability can be either of 99.9% and higher, indicating that the tested man is the biological father of the child or the paternity test result can indicate a probability of 0% meaning that the tested man is not the biological father of the child.

Home DNA testing is available for a range of DNA tests, including DNA paternity tests and maternity tests. You can now do a number of others tests at home without ever having to go to a lab or clinic. Collecting samples in your home has made DNA testing convenient and very simple.
In what ways has home DNA testing made things simple?
•	The sampling procedure for the range of DNA tests available, including paternity tests, is done by means of oral swabs. Oral swabs are easy and painless and can be used on infants. Moreover, the guidelines for good DNA samples collection are so easy to follow that you really cannot go wrong.
•	You can conveniently order your DNA test online and receive the kit at home.
•	Doing the testing in your own home means anonymity and privacy; you do not need to go to a hospital or private clinic. Also, these tests are considerably cheaper as they do not necessitate assistance by doctors or nurses.
•	You do not have to be constrained by any appointments; you can take your time and collect your DNA samples when it is convenient for you, even having different people taking part in the same test being sampled on different days and in different locations.
Once I have collected my home DNA testing sample, then what about my results?
Home DNA tests only require that you collect DNA samples at home. It is important to note that although the home paternity test has the word “home” it is only the sample collection that you do at home; once you collect the necessary DNA samples you then need to pack these samples correctly and return them for laboratory testing. Qualified scientific analysts with the technical expertise and equipment are needed to analyse the microscopic DNA strands and provide you with the test results. DNA testing is not quite like a pregnancy test or a home test to check your insulin levels where you get your result there and then.
As mentioned, the advantages of DNA testing are numerous. You will get clear guidance on how to do the test and your results should be issued in just a few working days. This however, depends on the type of test you require, the time it takes for you to actually send your samples and for those samples to be received by the DNA testing company. Logically, testing cannot commence until the DNA samples have been received.

Electronic cigarettes are battery-powered devices, so you need to charge the battery regularly in order to continue using the vaping device. Luckily, there are a number of chargers available on the market today. In this article, we are going to take a closer look at some of the chargers available for your electronic cigarette.

Let’s start with the basic USB charger. This type of e-cig charger plugs into any standard USB socket available on computers and other electronic devices. The charger can be used to charge your e-cig battery conveniently and is usually included in the starter kit.

To charge the battery using wall sockets, you need wall chargers for electronic cigarettes. A wall adapter is usually included in the starter kit as well, but you can pick up additional ones to store at the office or other places you visit frequently. In order to use the wall adapter, you need to combine it with the USB charger.

Those who spend most of their time on the road can certainly benefit from the electronic cigarette car charger. Yes, it plugs into the power socket of your car, allowing you to charge your battery on the go. Similar to the wall adapter, you need combine the car charger with a USB charger to be able to charge your battery; an extra USB charger is usually included when you buy a car charger.

If you have difficulties plugging the USB charger into the slot – usually due to limited space or difficult angle – you can also get a USB extended charger instead. It is a 28” long USB cord on one side and an e-cig battery charger on the other. With the extended cord, attaching the charger to a USB port will be much easier to do.

Review the catalogue of your favorite electronic cigarette supplier and find out more about the chargers available for your vaping device.

So I know it is a little after Christmas now but I was hoping to be able to share with you some tips when it comes to dealing with that leftover Xmas Turkey you might have. For my family and I we always are left with a good deal of Xmas Turkey, but with all the carnivores in my family it usually isn’t a problem. But over the years I’ve developed a few recipes myself and found some on the internet that will help you get rid of that Christmas Turkey.

For me a favourite and easy way to get rid of that excess Turkey is to make a simple Turkey sandwich and just add some cranberry sauce to give it that extra little flavouring. I am a big soup fan myself and can eat it all day, especially in winter. So why not take some of that extra Turkey and make some Turkey soup out of it? It’s easy to do and it’s a simple comfort food that everyone will love!

But my personal favourite thing to do with leftover Xmas Turkey has to be Turkey pot pie. For those of you who haven’t tried it, you are really missing out. It is quite simple really, and you can even freeze it which will allow you to enjoy it at a later time. Prep time is around 20 minutes and with cooking time only being an hour, this is a great meal that you can have on your plate quickly!

And it is an easy recipe to cook and easy to find online. My personal favourite site to find recipes is allrecipes.com. And you can find the link to make Turkey pot pie here: http://allrecipes.com/recipe/turkey-pot-pie-i/

I first found out about Turkey pot pie at a London restaurant that I visited with Groupon discount deals. My kids gave me a voucher for discounted deals on London restaurants for just being such a great mom I guess! Anyways, so I ordered the Turkey pot pie and have been in love with it ever since. I highly recommend Turkey pot pie for all the Turkey lovers out there.

So I hope my little tips have helped you come up with some good ideas to get rid of that excess Xmas Turkey that always seems to be around.

Several television and media advertisements have stressed the need for people to thoroughly wash their hands and other touch points to avoid picking up and passing on infections and germs that can cause uncomfortable and unwanted conditions. However, door handles are never mentioned even though they are touched by every person that enters a new room at any time. A large amount of bacteria will be placed on the handles and transferred onto other people, objects and mechanisms.

The type of infections that can be picked up from dirty handles of doors are Staphylococcus Aureas, E.coli, fungal infections, viral infections such as influenza; in fact the list is an unpleasantly long one. Hand washing is the first line of defence against these bugs.

Public toilets are the worst place to catch these types of infections as the volume of people entering these places means a huge amount and variety of bacteria is deposited on the door handles. Even though you may take the time to thoroughly wash your hands before leaving, you are more than likely going to have to touch the handle once more. Although you are clean, the person who touched it before you may have just blown their nose. Harmful bacteria will still come into very close contact to you and your family, meaning lots of people are at risk of catching infections.

Carrying antiseptic wipes can be highly advantageous to those who want to avoid such unwanted interactions. These can be used to wipe all touch points that may contain a high degree and harmful amount of bacteria. Areas such as telephones, a keypad and mouse are all examples of other objects that are commonly forgotten about when cleaning.

Sterilising gel can also be used to combat the chance of infection and is also easy to carry around. This is particularly advantageous when washing hands with soap and warm water cannot be done. Simply apply the gel onto the hand and rub into the hands, ensuring that they are both evenly covered.

When cleaning your home, ensure that door handles are on top of your to-do list. This will not only make your home is clean and tidy but will also reduce the risk of family members and tenants becoming ill.

There are not only a range of insurers to choose from when looking at health insurance cover, there are also a number of extras, inclusions and conditions to compare. Therefore, to help you with your search, following are the five main things you need to pay attention to when choosing health insurance cover:

1-Inclusions or exclusions

It is important to decide what you want to be covered for, while balancing those inclusions with how much you can afford to pay in premiums.

2- Annual benefit limits

Each health insurer has extras or ancillary products with a variety of annual benefit limits. This means each year you can claim up to that amount within the year. The following year the annual benefit is replenished to the full amount. So decide what benefits you will use and if they limits will be sufficient whilst balancing the price you want to pay for your private health insurance.

3 – Costs

There are not only the obvious costs of the premiums to look at when comparing health insurance cover, but you also need to pay attention to some of the other costs, such as how much do you have to pay as an excess or a medical gap payment when you make a claim? For example, you may need to pay an excess when you are admitted to hospital, but also find out whether you have to make co-payments for each night you are in hospital too.

4 – Hospital and Extras

Hospital cover covers the expenses of procedures in hospital such as joint replacements, cardiac surgery and birth related services, depending on your level of cover. To avoid being charged the Medicare Levy Surcharge you need to have hospital cover with an excess of $500 or less on a single policy or $1,000 or less on a couples or family policy.

Extras or ancillary cover covers items such as dentist costs, optical costs and even remedial massage and physio.

Depending on your needs, you can either take hospital cover, extras or both.

5 – Level of Cover

The highest level of health insurance will usually cover you for your choice of private hospital and choice of doctor, top cover for hospital services, greater benefits from your extras and higher annual limits. It is important that you pay attention to the level of cover as you compare different policies, rather than simply assuming you’ll be getting inclusive cover just because you are taking out private health insurance.

Allan has been blogging about private health insurance and healthy living for a couple of years. When he is not writing, Allan likes to spend time with his family.
