Don’t let your office space affect your health
These days more and more people are opting to work for ourselves and are choosing to use our homes as our offices too. For many, their home is their pride and joy and time and money is spent ensuring it’s as welcoming and comforting as possible. However, this never seems to quite reach the home based office. Relatively few people make the most of this space which is crazy because it’s where we spend the most of our time. To ensure you get the most of your home office, you need to make sure it’s ergonomically sound. This means making sure your work area is adapted for your maximum comfort. This is not only vital to ensure a happy mind but also keep your healthy.
Here are some tips for you to consider when working from your own home office.
Invest in a decent chair
Probably most important of all is the type if chair you use. Most people will think any old chair will do but using a chair that doesn’t support your back or isn’t padded for a day or two might seem ok but over a longer period of time, you can really damage your back. If your back isn’t fully supported, you might start to slouch and overstretch your lower back. You also need to be able to support the small of your back by using a chair that will allow you to put your feet flat on the floor. Expect to pay quite a bit for a decent chair but don’t feel guilty, you are investing in your health!
Don’t compromise on desk space
Considering the fact that your chair is incredibly important, it will come as no surprise that the type of desk you have is also important too. The key things you need to make sure you have is enough desk space to keep all your stationary and paperwork in one place and enough space to keep everything you need nearby without having to over stretch yourself. If you are unable to sit up straight in your chair and it not be a stain to type and see your screen.
Protect your eyes
It’s unnatural to force our eyes to stare directly at something bright for a long time and so it’s not a surprise that your eyes start to suffer thanks to our computer screens. To reduce the negative effects, try and minimise glare coming off the screen by cleaning it regularly and maybe adding a protective screen. Also, keeping your head around two foot away is recommended.
Use adequate lighting
One of the additional reasons for eyestrain in the workplace is due to the lack of lighting in the room. Severe headaches are a common complaint and a bright screen in a dimly lit room is often the cause. You probably don’t even realise how much your eyes are struggling to see the tiny text on your screen. If you’ve got a lack of natural light, a desk lamp is always a good idea but make sure you aim the light at the papers on your desk and not at you screen or your eyes.
Spending a bit of time and effort making your home office as comfortable as possible will help you enjoy working from home and may even be somewhere you look forward to spending your working day. It’s the little things that help and even something as simple as flowers in room can cheer up the gloomiest of office spaces.
