People suffering from acne problems often get confused about using moisturizer, especially in winter. Oily skin with wide open pores is the root cause of acne and pimples. Most people with oily skin avoid buying moisturizers as they (wrongly) think that moisturizers aggravate acne problems further.
Moisturizing is necessary even for oily skin type
Due to excess oil and sebum secretion you may not feel the dryness but your skin looks greasy and dull. To get a blemish free younger looking skin you need proper cleansing and moisturizing irrespective of the skin type. Vitamin rich moisturizers nourish the skin. So, not using moisture is never a solution for acne prone skin.
Pick the one labeled ‘for Oily Skin’
What you need to do is choosing the right moisture for your skin type. Now-a-days most brands sell moisturizing products with specific labels such as for oily skin, dry skin and normal skin. In some cases you may get to see moisturizers with a label ‘from oily to normal skin’. However, such distinction makes your task easier.
Check ingredients
If you have oily skin always check the ingredients before buying a moisturizing lotion or cream. Products for oily skin should be oil free.
Water-based moisturizers
The best solution for acne prone skin could be the water-based or gel-based moisturizers. Vitamin E and mineral oils, which are known as essential ingredients for skin care products are not good for acne prone skin as they may cause clogging of pores and resulting acne eruption.

Everybody knows that acne problems begin in teenage and continues till one enters mid 20’s. But why acne problems begin during teenage? What’s the reason?
The reason is adolescence. This is the time when children attain adulthood – several physical changes take place. Acne is the cause of hormonal changes that take place during adolescence.
Teenage acne:
Let’s see what actually happens during adolescence:
Androgens, a group of steroid hormones, become active. Sexual characteristics start to develop at this age. As a result, facial glands become enlarged and sebaceous glands become hyper-active. Higher amount of sebum and dead skin cells result in clogged pores (follicles). This is the main reason behind acne.
To get rid of acne problems you have to do the following things:
- Take care of your skin in order to control excessive oil deposition
- Clean your face so that dead skin cells do not get the chance to clog the follicles
Your skin care should be chosen based on your skin type. You should consult a skin doctor to know what type of skin care routine you should follow to get rid of acne.
Other reasons of acne:
Hormonal change is not the only reason; some people suffer from acne because they inherited this. Stress is another problem of acne. Cortisol, the stress hormone, secretes when people become stressed. This hormone can worsen acne problems.
Teenage acne automatically goes off with age; however, they may leave ugly scars if proper care is not taken.

The hormonal change that takes place during adolescence is the main cause of acne. Acne outbreaks generally begin during teenage, while boys and girls undergo physical changes. That is why teens suffer most from acne.
Hormonal changes result in higher sebum secretion. Sebaceous glands are the oil glands present on the skin. Higher amount of oil makes the skin oily that attracts more dust particles. As a result, dust and dead skin cells clog the pores and lead to inflammatory lesions on face, neck, shoulder, chest and back. Acne is the most common skin disease. Acne lesions stay on skin for few days and cure automatically; however, they may leave ugly scars on skin if proper care is not taken.
It is difficult to control the oil glands. Hence, to stop acne problems you need to keep your skin clean so that dead skin cells and dust cannot deposit and block the pores. It is true that acne is not a serious problem and it does not involve severe health threats; still you need to take care of your skin. Cleansing, toning, and moisturizing help to avoid acne. To prevent acne outbreaks, you may need to use some kind of medication too.
Word of Caution:
Do not pick the pimples; by picking pimples you make the scars permanent. To remove such acne scarring you may even need to undergo laser resurfacing or other invasive treatment. Also, make sure you use medications and skin care products that go well with your skin type. Consult a skin doctor if you need any help.

Acne is a skin condition that occurs when the pilosebaceous unit of our skin does not work properly. Sebaceous glands, hair follicles and skin hair together form pilosebaceous unit. Sebaceous glands secrete sebum that lubricates the skin and keeps it healthy. During adolescence, sebum secretion rate becomes higher due to hormonal changes. As a result skin gets oily; follicles and glands become more prone to blockage.
As oil content increases, skin becomes sticky. Dead skin cells and dust easily get stuck on to the skin. These depositions block the follicles and sebaceous glands and finally result in acne. Bacterial infection around dead skin cell deposition can worsen the case.
If you want to get rid of acne, you need to take care of two things:
1] Remove excess oil. I repeat, ‘excess oil’. Your skin needs oil, so making it completely dry won’t help you. You have to consult a skin doctor to know how you can achieve that. Regular facial treatments can help you do away with the excess oil.
2] Keep your skin clean. Use a suitable face wash to clean your face at least once a day. Splash plain water as many times as possible. You can use a good cleanser to remove sticky dust particles from your skin.
If there is no oil to hold the dust particles and the amount of dust on skin is very low, chances of acne formation will be reduced and you will be able to get rid of acne easily.

Acne problems begin at the age of 11 to 13 – the age of adolescence. The main reason behind acne is the change in hormone levels that take place during adolescence. That is the reason acne is often cited as an adolescent problem; but the fact is: even adults can have acne problems.
What happens during teenage?
Androgens become active at this stage. This results in enlarged facial glands and higher sebum secretion. This sebum and dead skin cells together clog the facial glands; and acne forms.
Apart from hormonal change other reasons of acne are:
1) Heredity:
If any of your parents had acne during teenage, you risk a higher chance of acne problems. Heredity may not be the main and only reason of acne; but a contributory factor for sure.
2) Stress:
Stress can influence acne formation in adults. Cortisol, the stress hormone, becomes active when people are stressed and worried. This hormone not only makes acnes worse, but initiates acne in many.
Hence, apart from regular skin care or other medication suggested by your skin doctor, you should also practice meditation and light free-hand exercise to control your stress level.
